“We're in the age of the idea. The organization that can develop a culture of creativity and idea generation will be the winners”.
Kevin Roberts (former Chairman of Saatchi & Saatchi
Kevin Roberts will be the highlight of the annual evening cruise on Windermere on the 14th of July; he promises to be insightful, provocative and hopefully illuminating about his ideas on business and we are all inevitably hoping that he will provide us with some entertaining perspectives on his more recent brushes with PR….
But Kevin’s view of the world, as seen from the heights of heading a global organisation, is insightful to us all, whatever the business or team we lead. The sense that the world is now a more vibrant, risky, exciting, and, yes dangerous, place resonates; our leadership style has to adapt and the challenge to be able to take an idea, and run with it is a must for all.
Experience of working from Cumbria, doing business in different parts of the UK, and beyond, means we have to rely on our wits to win. We must take our skills out there, because most feel it is too far to come to us. The IoD members in Cumbria are emblematic of this. While everyone has a different product or service, there is a common cause to get out there and sell our wares, and the capability of Cumbria alongside them. My own organisation, Brathay Trust in Ambleside reaches far and wide to enhance our reputation as a centre for leadership and development, which we must constantly reinvent to stay competitive.
I meet many young people from Cumbria who are embarking on the road to sell their own distinctive skills and capabilities and I am always impressed at their ambition; we need to ensure that they remain positive and join those of us who have taken on the role of selling Cumbria.
I look forward to seeing you on the cruise.
